(Tampa, FL, June 29, 2009)  -- A procedure to help treat patients with spinal compression fractures caused by osteoporosis is now being performed by Dr. Cliff R. Davis, Vascular & Interventional Radiologist at Tower Interventional Oncology & Vascular Center.

“This procedure literally brings new hope to patients that previously would have been confined to a life of bed rest and painkillers,” said Dr. Davis.  “For the right patients, vertebroplasty can literally recapture the quality of their lives.”

Osteoporosis is a condition where a patient’s bones become thin and fragile. This bone loss often happens without any symptoms and can lead to spinal fractures. Osteoporosis affects approximately 10 million Americans and another 34 million have low bone mass and are at risk for the disease.  Nearly 80% of those diagnosed with osteoporosis are women. 

For people that suffer from osteoporosis, one of the most common fracture sites is in the vertebrae, the bones that make up the spinal column.  While osteoporosis causes more than 1.5 million fractures a year, approximately 700,000 of these are spinal fractures, also known as vertebral fractures. 

Percutaneous vertebroplasty is an image-guided procedure in which a needle is inserted through the patient’s back, and acrylic bone cement, used in other bone and joint procedures, is slowly injected into the bone where it hardens and stabilizes the affected vertebrae.  This minimally-invasive procedure is typically done as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia.
